Evelyn Ratima Honoured with Prestigious 2025 Meritorious Napier Civic Award

On Tuesday evening, Evelyn Ratima (Marangatūhetaua, Ngāti Kurumōkihi, Ngāi Tarata) was recognised with the highest honour at the Napier City Council Civic Awards ceremony – the 2025 Meritorious Napier Civic Award.

Earlier this year, in May 2025, Mana Ahuriri and Te Taiwhenua o Te Whanganui ā Orotū came together to jointly nominate Evelyn for her lifetime of service and contribution to the community. That nomination not only saw her selected as a Civic Award recipient, but elevated to the most prestigious level of acknowledgement on the night.

The Meritorious Napier Civic Award is reserved for individuals whose leadership, dedication, and selfless commitment have made an extraordinary impact across the city. Evelyn’s recognition reflects her tireless efforts to uplift whānau, strengthen hapū and marae, and ensure the stories and values of Ngāti Kahungunu and wider communities continue to thrive.

Te Taiwhenua o Te Whanganui ā Orotū Chair Hori reti said the award is a fitting recognition:

“Evelyn’s work has always been about people – building connections, nurturing identity, and giving back to her community. Her acknowledgement at this level shows how deeply her mahi has touched Napier as a whole.”

Evelyn joins a distinguished group of leaders whose contributions have shaped the social and cultural fabric of Napier. For whānau, hapū and iwi, this recognition is a moment of immense pride and celebration.
